Why Cosmetic Surgery Numbers Are Up Among Baby Boomers

Not too long ago we discussed the increasing popularity of cosmetic prejuvenation for millennials. These non-surgical procedures help reduce fine lines and wrinkles while people are in their 20s and 30s, which means fewer cosmetic issues in your 40s and 50s. As it turns out, young people aren’t the only folks trying to look their best.

Nationally, baby boomers are undergoing cosmetic procedures more than before. The Philadelphia, PA team at Jefferson Plastic Surgery explores why, and then offers some suggestion for rejuvenation procedures.

Findings from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)

According to a press release from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there was a jump in cosmetic procedures performed on patients age 55 and older in 2018. Around 50,000 more people in that age range underwent surgical and non-surgical enhancements compared to 2017. The ASPS says that this increase in cosmetic treatments is the result of more baby boomers re-entering the dating scene after getting divorced.

It will be interesting to see if these numbers hold in the coming years as more people hit their mid-50s. What the numbers reveal is that cosmetic procedures have increased in popularity for people of all generations. Below are just a few treatments that baby boomers may find especially helpful.

Facial Plastic Surgery Options

When it comes to reducing wrinkles and lines, the most commonly sought out options include the traditional facelift, the brow/forehead lift, and the lower face lift. All of these procedures can smooth out wrinkles and reduce sagging skin. A neck lift can also be helpful for issues with the neckline that occur with advanced age.

Many baby boomers also undergo cosmetic eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), which can be performed on drooping upper eyelids and baggy or puffy lower eyelids.

Breast Enhancement Surgery Options

The breasts undergo many changes as a result of the aging process. This is why getting breast implants or undergoing breast lift (mastopexy) is so popular in this age range. Whether patients undergo breast augmentation or have the perkiness of their breasts restored, the results are a more youthful and appealing appearance.

Body Contouring and Sculpting Options

Staying in shape can be challenging as people age. Childbirth and weight loss over time can also result in stretch marks and loose skin. This is when body contouring surgeries are helpful.

A bit of liposuction can remove stubborn pockets of fat from the love handles and thighs. Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is ideal for loose skin of the lower abdomen. An arm lift (brachioplasty) or a thigh lift (thighplasty) can remove unwanted flab around the extremities for a toned and trimmer look.

Cosmetic Injectables for Facial Rejuvenation

Surgery isn’t the only answer to the aging process. There are many non-surgical treatments to consider as well. While the results may be temporary, they are stunning nonetheless.

BOTOX injections are the most popular of these non-surgical cosmetic procedures, able to treat crow’s feet, frown lines, laugh lines, and other common wrinkles of the face. Dermal filler injections can be used as well, filling in wrinkles, adding volume to sunken portions of the face, and giving you a more youthful look.
