Sports and Exercise After Breast Augmentation

Many people who undergo cosmetic surgery procedures lead active lifestyles. They may do yoga, weight training, or cardio to stay fit. Patients may also be professional or amateur athletes who play soccer or compete in mixed martial arts. If an active patient undergoes surgery, it’s crucial that they rest. These patients must stay away from the gym and competition until they’re fully healed and ready. This is especially important when it comes to breast augmentation surgery.

The team at Jefferson Plastic Surgery would like to go over the basics of sports and exercise after a person gets breast implants. We can discuss other adjustments following breast augmentation surgery during a consultation at our Philadelphia, PA practice.

Limited Physical Activity Right After Breast Surgery

After you’ve undergone breast augmentation, it’s important that you avoid strenuous physical activity for the first two weeks after your procedure. This gives your body a chance to heal after surgery during a crucial time.

This doesn’t mean you should avoid all physical exertion, however. Plastic surgeons do recommend that breast augmentation patients walk to remain somewhat active. Walking will ensure proper blood flow as you heal, and prevent blood clots from forming in the legs due to inactivity.

Slowly Returning to Physical Activity

Two weeks after breast augmentation surgery, patients can begin returning to some more challenging but still relatively light physical activities. This includes walking uphill or walking on a treadmill at an incline. Don’t push yourself beyond your limits, and follow your surgeon’s instructions.

By the end of a month, most patients will be able to resume many moderate exercises, including light cardio and swimming. Heavy lifting and strenuous body weight exercises should still be avoided, however, in order to prevent healing complications.

Full Return to Training and Your Exercise Routine

Patients should be mostly back to their normal workout routines by the six-week mark. That means moderate weight training, yoga, running, biking, and so forth. You might not be able to push yourself to your limits at this point, but you can definitely break a good sweat and elevate your heart rate again.

Around eight weeks after breast augmentation, patients should be totally healed. That means they’re cleared to push themselves and perform at their peak. If you’ve been gradually increasing intensity over the course of two months, this return to regular training or professional competition shouldn’t feel that challenging.

Finding a Good Sports Bra

In order to avoid drooping and sagging while staying active, it’s important that you find a good sports bra. The comfort and support provided by a sports bra will be crucial as you’re recovering from surgery. The sports bra will also help ensure reduced sagging of the breasts in the long run.

What to Do If an Implant Ruptures

Sometimes accidents happen, especially if you’re playing sports or training hard. A collision between athletes, a hard blow to the chest, or a sudden fall can impact your implants. This can lead to a ruptured breast implant, which has to be addressed as soon as you notice it. We can perform breast implant revision, which will involve the removal and replacement of the old implant so you look great again.
