Skin Care Tips for the Fall

The fall is upon us, which means pumpkin spice, sweater weather (eventually), and watching the leaves change. It also means dry skin and discomfort as the air turns colder and drier. Thankfully there’s a lot you can do to prevent irritated skin and continue looking great well into autumn and winter.

The team of skilled cosmetic surgeons at Jefferson Plastic Surgery would like to share some tips when it comes to skin care during the fall. This can help you reduce wrinkles, avoid blemishes, and eliminate patches of dry skin from the comfort of your own home.

Change Your Body Cleanser and Scrub for the Season

In the summer, you were probably using shower scrubs and body washes that were light and smelled fruity and fragrant. With the fall, changing your routine to match the season is best for your skin.

Hydrating body washes that are creamier and/or oiler will help moisturize dry skin and prevent irritation through the day. Try to avoid any soaps or cleansers that dry out your skin. The key to great skin in the fall is locking in hydration and moisture.

Switch to a Thicker Moisturizer

On the note of replenishing your skin, you should also switch to thicker moisturizers and lotions during the fall. Thick creams can lock in that much-needed moisture to help fight dry skin all day long. For people with sensitive skin, lotions and moisturizers with aloe, elastin, or collagen can be extremely helpful.

Add Facial Oils to Your Routine

Putting oils on your face seems counterintuitive for great skin, yet facial oils may be just what you need for the fall. There are specially formulated oils that help moisturize your face during dry fall and winter weather.

Exfoliate Less Frequently

You may be exfoliating regularly during the summer, but it’s best to cut back during the fall. Your skin is not as oily during these drier months, and will need all the moisture it can get. You can still exfoliate, but moisturizing to avoid dry skin and skin damage tends to be the ideal option for the fall.

Consider a Humidifier for Your Home

Since the atmosphere is much drier in the fall, you can do your skin a favor by investing in a humidifier. Adding some moisture to your home or even just your bedroom can prevent your skin from drying out, flaking, and cracking.

Continue to Wear Sunblock and Sunglasses

Even though the summer is over, the sun can still do damage to your skin. Continue to wear sunblock whenever you go outdoors and keep those sunglasses on as well. This is year-round protection from skin cancer as well as cosmetic sun damage and the aging process.
